The rail tunnel being constructed in Stockholm will be the backbone of the transportation system. The automated Ventilation Control System from Identec is being extensively used in the construction process to manage air flow systems and monitor them. Ventilation control is an extremely important factor to be considered in the Tunnel and Mining industry as it involves dealing with a number of poisonous gases and materials.

The General Manager of Identec stressed on the importance of the safety of personnel working in tunnels. He added that with their WatcherTunnel application is capable of providing a robust system which is able to respond to the conditions that prevail underground and also be proactive in predicting any dangers. The automation system uses electrochemical sensors that continuously monitor toxic gases, hydrogen and oxygen levels. The system is water resistant and is well shielded form dust and other pollutants. By integrating the Ventilation Control System with the WatcherTunnel system the ability of the system to anticipate potential dangers has been enhanced and it is able to closely monitor the movement and position of the personnel working underground. Timely alarms and triggers are set whenever the system detects presence of abnormal substances.
