4-H National HQ, together with National 4-H Council have declared the 2012 National Science Experiment, titled ‘4-H Eco-Bot Challenge’.

The 2012 experiment will highlight robotic engineering concepts. It intends inspiring the youth with a demonstration on programming a self-directed robot for cleaning up a simulated environmental spill. This annual youth science event invites nation-wide youth to achieve a single, innovative experiment on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, marking 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD).

The 2012 National Science Experiment is designed by The Ohio State University and Ohio State Extension. It has been hosted to demonstrate the potential of engineering principles to revolutionize the ecosystem as well as various communities. The 4-H professionals will develop their engineering skills by assembling their own individual Eco-Bots and control surfaces for an effective environmental clean-up. The interaction between the Eco-Bot's design features and various surface control configurations will then be tested by the Youth, followed by determining the best clean-up solution of choice for the simulated spill.

Year after year, Cooperative Extension System faculty and staff from the nation's 111 land-grant colleges and universities have been welcomed by the 4-H National Headquarters and National 4-H Council for submitting proposals to provide the Youth with a detailed innovative experiment during 4-H NYSD. The jury at 4-H National Headquarters and National 4-H Council together with education, engineering and science professionals will review all the proposals and finally select the year's National Science Experiment.
