Numerex Develops Remote Monitoring of Heart Pump Technology of MicroMed Cardiovascular

Numerex, a single source supplier of secure machine-to-machine (M2M) products and services, recently declared that the company has created a comprehensive Device-Network-Application (DNA) solution that enables remote cellular monitoring of MicroMed Cardiovascular’s HeartAssist5 System.

Numerex was the major developer of the HeartAssist5 System’s new wireless monitoring connectivity as well as software application that includes two devices from MicroMed such as the MicroMed Controller and the HeartAssist5 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). Innovated by Dr. Michael DeBakey in association with NASA, the MicroMed HeartAssist5 LVAD is the unique LVAD with a cellular-based remote monitoring and an accurate, direct flow measurement system.

Before Numerex’s new M2M technology was introduced, the device data was used by the clinicians. The body-worn external controller unit was attached on to the MicroMed Heart Attendant, followed by transmission through a local internet connection. However, continuous reporting and limited mobility may not be possible.

The team at MicroMed Cardiovascular intended to incorporate enhanced real-time visibility to the devices. With the help of Numerex, a cellular radio was integrated within the MicroMed Controller, resulting in improved cellular network services, as well as precise web-based application that can collectively render the reported data for clinical review.

Based on the safe and reliable Numerex FAST platform, the company developed the MicroMed Cardiovascular M2M application. Included in Numerex DNA solution, the firmware was customized to have a small size of the data packet transmissions, optimizing from over 50MB to less than 4MB for a month, promoting cost-efficiency. Remote monitoring of the device enables consistent reporting of accurate device statistics. Furthermore, it allows the anomalies in the device to be reported in real-time.
