VTT to Solve Difficulties in Machine-Based Autonomic Service Networks

There is a rapid increase in the number of network-connected devices that can efficiently carry out M2M communication. Experts consider the task of integrating these devices to network and services to be challenging.

A European ICT project is being hosted by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland that highlights the services being provided via Machine-To-Machine networks including a range of electronic devices like actuators, mobile phones, machines, and sensors.

The main objective of the project is to revolutionarily implement autonomic computing and communication paradigms for solving the issues resulting from the complexity in M2M networks. According to customers, the efficiency of equipment and service products operation is limited in complex environments. In addition, the companies find the customer support functions to be mostly expensive.

This problem can be dealt by Autonomic Services in M2M networks (A2Nets) project via a horizontal viewpoint, thereby meeting the requirements of multiple domains. The development of horizontal architecture, enabling solutions and standards of M2M systems intends improving the technology application in several vertical solutions. The project’s outcome is being evaluated in test environments associated with telematics, energy and well-being.

The international Eureka/ITEA2 A2Nets consortium consists of 24 partners. Around € 23.5 M of funding has been granted for its M2M research. Besides VTT, the project consortium is made up of Thales, Atos, Innova, Bull, Rücker Lypsa Gemalto, and Polar. The project will continue until 2014 spring.

ITEA is a well-established European programme that supports software-intensive systems and services. At present, the programme includes over 1,000 partners from 30 countries with more than 140 projects.
