Media Invited to See NASA’s Hurricane Mission with Global Hawk Unmanned Scientific Aircraft

NASA is inviting media on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to see two Global Hawk unmanned scientific aircraft that will fly over the Atlantic Ocean to study tropical cyclones and their growth process.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m. EDT that day, reporters will view the aircraft being deployed for a second consecutive season on NASA's Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) mission. They also will tour the mission control center at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. Reporters will meet HS3 scientists and pilots and learn about NASA's efforts to better understand these powerful storms.

To participate in the media day, reporters should contact Keith Koehler by email at [email protected]. The registration deadline for non-U.S. citizens is 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26. U.S. citizens must register before Wednesday, Sept. 4.

NASA's Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicles are equipped with instruments to survey the overall environment of tropical storms and peer into the inner core of hurricanes to study their structure and processes.

HS3 flights are scheduled to begin Aug. 20 and continue through September. HS3 is a five-year mission.
