Automation Company ABB Receives Order from Oyu Tolgoi

ABB has received a $15 million worth procurement order from Oyu Tolgoi, Mongolia-based mining firm, to enhance the existing capability and consistency of transmission lines. This will enable Oyu Tolgoi to transfer more power to its copper and gold mines located in Gobi desert with less impact on the environment.

Martin Gross, Head of ABB’s Grid Systems Business, has stated that their eco-friendly solution will also enhance grid strength and ensures safe power transmission to the mine and nearby locations.

It was reported that ABB will develop, deliver and install two static var compensators (SVCs) by next year. Each SVC will feature -100/+100 MVAr rating. SVC is one of the products of ABB’s FACTS technologies family and enables the designing of smart grids.

FACTS technology enables power transmission with less environmental effect. It reduces costs and minimizes performance times than the conventional alternate method of constructing new power transmission lines or power plants. FACTS can also handle frequency and voltage stability problems and enable the transmission system to function effectively.
