Robotic surgery performed at the Cork University Maternity Hospital helped in the delivery of a female child to Irish parents. The couple had lost their unborn baby last year due to the health condition of the mother. This was the first robot aided delivery to be performed in Europe.
Using robotic surgery complex surgeries can be performed with very tiny incisions.Dr. Barry O’Reily, discovered that his patient Anne had a weak cervix and was at a higher risk of miscarriage. Dr. Reily explained that going by conventional methods to address the problem, Doctors would perform a cervical stitch on the patient, which would require almost three months of recovery time. But in case of robotic surgery the patient is discharged within 24 hours and the recovery time is just a week.
CUMH has been identified as the first Robotic Gynaecological Epicentre in Europe and enjoys the distinction of being the only hospital to perform surgeries using advanced robotic techniques. Reily had explained details of the robotic procedure to the couple, who were convinced that the procedure would help them deliver a healthy baby unlike what happened last time. Dr. Reily added that robotic procedures are very precise and perform surgeries with small incisions. After performing robotic surgery on Anne, she later conceived and delivered a full term healthy baby. Dr. Reily gave full credit to the da Vinci robotic procedure and hoped to help women with similar problems through the procedure.
