Hartford Hospital Acquires Preclinical Vascular Robotic System from Hansen Medical

Hartford Hospital’s Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) has bought a preclinical vascular robotic system from Hansen Medical to carry out an advanced preclinical endovascular research.

The vascular robotic system uses flexible robotic technology, which is based on the Sensei X Robotic Catheter System.

The distal tips in the inner leader catheter and the outer sheath can be controlled individually in the vascular robotic system. The standard guidewires can also be altered. The Sensei system is highly adaptable which allows for compatibility with future 6F therapeutic devices that are available in the market presently. The Sensei X Robotic Catheter System is a combination of advanced 3D visualisation and 3D catheter. The technology in the system is controlled by a robotic arm that is highly precise, stable and enables catheter navigation. The Sensei system has already been used by more than 7,000 patients for cardiac arrhythmia. According to the President and CEO of Hansen Medical Bruce Barclay, the company chose Hartford Hospital due to the good reputation it had to provide innovative and quality care and its efforts in the areas of teaching, research and patient care.

Hansen Medical has acquired CE approval for its vascular robotic systems called Magellan Robotic System and the NorthStar Robotic Catheter in Europe. The Magellan Robotic System is yet to receive FDA approval in the US. The company has also carried out 20 endovascular procedures using a previous version of the vascular robotic system in order to display its ability to treat peripheral vascular diseases without causing extensive exposure to radiation.
