AeroVironment’s Newly Launched Digital Wasp AE Small UAS to Support BATMAV Program

Participation in the BATMAV program stimulated the Air Force to stipulate an order for Wasp AE systems worth $2,447,949.

The Air Force carried out stringent engineering and user assessments of Wasp AE for more than a year to assure that it has met the requirements of the BATMAV program. These assessments were successfully achieved and resulted in acceptance. Wasp AE is now entitled to be purchased by other customers in the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Wasp AE demonstrates the stable development of the Wasp small UAS, which was adopted earlier by the Air Force and Marine Corps to support small unit tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Wasp AE incorporates AeroVironment’s digital data link and is interoperable with the AeroVironment’s Raven, digital Puma, portable ground control station, and Shrike VTOL. It will efficiently carry out encrypted communication, much farther than line-of-sight operation and voice, text, video and data relay.

Wasp AE adopts the 275 gm Mantis i22 AE, the smallest Mantis array of miniature gimbaled payloads from AeroVironment, through which operators can have both color and infrared video imagery via a single sensor package. With 2.8 lb weight, the Wasp AE air vehicle is well-suited for ground and water landing, as well as land and maritime missions, with 20 % more flight duration than the previous Wasp.
