Summa Health System made a surgical advancement marking the successful achievement of new single-site robotic gallbladder surgery for two patients at its Summa Akron City Hospital facility. This surgery required small, single incision in belly buttons.

The latest surgical success with two patients shows that Akron hospital is the only facility in Summit County and among the three locations in Ohio to accomplish single-site technology-based surgical procedure.

These robotic cholecystectomy procedures were performed by Adrian G. Dan, M.D., Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon, with the assistance of Mark Pozsgay, D.O., Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon, along with a surgical team. The surgery was conducted with the help of a new set of specifically designed robotic surgery instruments equipped with Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Si Surgery System.

Summa’s Chief of Robotics Thomas J. Mendise, M.D. says that this new technology creates revolution with robotic surgery program and promotes Summa’s objective to reach new milestones in surgery. It also intends creating latest advancements in patient care and offers new innovative technology to the patients through various advanced treatments and surgeries.

Summa Health System has spent over $91,000 on behalf of this new technology, while achieving over 800 gallbladder surgeries on an annual basis.

Since 2004, Summa Health System has been providing robotic surgery at Summa Akron City Hospital and has an accomplishment of 1,379 robotic surgery procedures, to its credits.
