Kairos Autonomi, a provider of robotic appliqué kits, will develop a mobile humanoid robot capable of carrying out human-like operations. The firm’s innovative business model will now be implemented in another Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge (DRC).

The President and CEO of Kairos Autonomi, Troy Takach stated that the creation and commercialization of viable products is the major objective for any DARPA challenge participant. This modified approach can be applicable even for DARPA Robotics Challenge. Kairos was among the many participants to carry a product from the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges to the market.

Kairos has a long-term history of supplying extensive robotic appliqué kits for full-size ground vehicles. Based on endurance, excellent decision making, robustness, visual sensing, and self-control via supervised autonomy, the company has started developing a novel platform to provide support and security during disaster response scenarios. Technologies from the Pronto4 Robotic Appliqué Kit will be built within the platform. LADD actuators developed in Utah will act as primary motor drivers. In addition, third-party dexterous manipulators, battery power, cameras, sensors and lidar are the some of its major components.

In order to carry out this effort, Kairos has established a team that will manage the overall hardware, firmware and data serving tasks. Also, the company intends collaborating with Autonomous Solutions and with other third parties that are experts in dexterous manipulators.

The two main objectives in DARPA Robotics Challenge are:

  • Developing robots based on common tools like hand tools and motor vehicles for efficiently performing multi-faceted tasks in complex situations.
  • Promoting cost-efficiency features in the company’s software and hardware products.
