Britain to Host FIRA RoboWorld Cup 2012

For the first time, FIRA RoboWorld Cup arrives in the UK and will take place from 20 to 25 August, 2012. Here, the most advanced robots will compete in a dynamic contest that involves sports like weightlifting, football, and basketball.

Overall, 27 teams will be competing, and the competition includes around 202 individuals from across the globe.

Organizing bodies will undertake bidding for the competition similar to that of Olympic Games. Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), a joint research project between UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol, will play a significant role.

Competitors from South Korea, Mexico, Canada, India, China, Taiwan, and Malaysia will participate at the event. Two teams from UK include one from the University of Plymouth and the other from BRL.

The events will unfurl during the end of August in At-Bristol, which will serve as a platform for testing and completion of the latest technology by several leading roboticists.

The categories mainly underline humanoid robots that can walk and run. ‘HuroCup’ events feature wall climbing, football, basketball, marathon running and weightlifting by robots weighing up to 30 kg and measuring 130 cm. Furthermore, ‘MiroSot’, a 5- or 11-a-side football game involving wheeled robots fall under other categories. The position of the robots and the ball will be monitored by an external vision system. This information will be transmitted to another computer, followed by subsequent calculation. The BRL bid was directed by Dr Guido Herrmann from the University of Bristol.

The 2012 Joint FIRA-TAROS Congress, a major scientific conference, will be held in conjunction with the tournament. Additionally, the TAROS Industry Day will be hosted on 23 August at BRL on the UWE Bristol’s Frenchay Campus.

A public lecture will be conducted on 21 August, at 7 pm in the Wills Memorial Building. Presentation on ‘Era of Social Robotics’ will be delivered by Professor Shuzhi Sam Ge, from The National University of Singapore and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

The event welcomes the public from 22 to 25 August for a vibrant experience.
