Nyrstar Hobart, a multi-metals company awarded a process order for replacing the distributed control system (DCS) at one of its zinc smelting plant in Tasmania with a PlantPAx process automation system from Rockwell Automation.
The general manager at Nyrstar explained that the degenerative state of the DCS system at the plant and the high maintenance and upgrading costs made them decide on replacing it with the PlantPAx process automation system from Rockwell. He added that the automation system will promote co-ordinated working between different process areas and maintenance will be possible during the uptime of the plant and also provide improved diagnostic services.
Rockwell was able to win the order by projecting a phased integration plan spanning three years and also a backup option for guaranteed process continuity and technical support for the installation. An authorized dealer of Rockwell, NHP Electrical, also promised to support the project on a long-term basis. The vice president of Rockwell explained that the contract will require project management, system cutover engineering and application engineering services to be delivered by Rockwell. Some of the advantages provided by the PlantPAx process automation system are increased productivity, optimised flexibility and quicker turnover time, compliance to regulatory standards and enhanced reliability and quality.
