Vicenza Hospital Includes Second CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System

Accuray has declared that Vicenza Hospital has incorporated the second CyberKnife robot and has become the first medical center in Europe to include two CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery systems for cancer treatment. This new system is likely to be deployed for treating patients by the end of this year.

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System

Professor Federico Colombo M.D., Director of the Neurosurgical Department at Vicenza Hospital, has stated that the CyberKnife robot offers precise and rapid radiosurgical therapy for any part of the body serving as an effective treatment option for cancer. He added that by including an additional CyberKnife robot they can easily cope with the rising need for accurate radiosurgical therapy as well as to treat a broad range of cancer victims including those who were not given any surgical options till date due to physiological or medical related problems and for those who demand an alternate treatment method other than surgery.

Vicenza Hospital included the first CyberKnife system in 2003 for treating arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and will treat benign brain tumors like meningiomas and neuromas. The additional system can also treat tumors located inside and outside the cranium. According to Professor Federico Colombo, so far their medical center has treated around 2,300 cancer patients using the CyberKnife robot and they expect to double the patient numbers treated by CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery.

Vittorio Puppo, General Manager of Accuray EIMEA (Europe, India, Middle East, Africa), has said that due to the continuous increase in number of patient outcomes and the expansion of the Vicenza Hospital, the requirement for robotic radiosurgery therapy within the medical center surpasses the facility of a single CyberKnife robot, and he added that the new installation can be deployed to treat not only intracranial tumors, but also prostate liver and lung cancers.
