EPRI Releases Robot for Inspecting Power Lines

Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has launched a new robot for inspecting power lines in remote locations such as deserts and forests.

Power Lines Inspecting Robot

The robot is named as Transmission Inspection (TI) and it eliminates the requirement of manual labor which is costly and tiresome.

EPRI has already developed an archetype that can creep a small distance every day over power line and shield cables. Its sensors enable the detection of electrical variations. The robot features a lidar to determine if there is sufficient distance between the transmission lines and nearby objects like trees or ground. An infrared sensor enables the identification of hotspots. The structural integrity of the tower and other abrasions are assessed by an in-built camera system.

The archetype can be powered by transferring energy from the high-voltage transmission lines found near the robot, without the requirement of establishing a contact between the robot and the power line.
