Doctors at Texas Fertility Center Experiment with Robotic Laparoscopy

Two endocrinologists, Dr. Kaylen Silverberg and Thomas Vaughn, at the Texas Fertility Center have been instructed to work with the da Vinci robotic surgery as an alternative to traditional laparoscopic or open surgery.

By offering the da Vinci mode of surgery at the hospital, the patients from Central Texas will be greatly benefited while undergoing surgery for removal of uterine fibroids, pelvic adhesions and endometriosis. These medical conditions are known to affect the patient’s fertility. The surgeons will be using one of the most sophisticated robotic surgical system developed by Intuitive Surgical.

Dr. Silverberg explained that the da Vinci system of robotic surgery provided the surgeon with three dimensional optics and superior control over the surgical instruments while performing complex surgeries. The surgeries are performed with increased safety and ease. He added that the da Vinci system presents promising opportunities in various fertility treatments. The da Vinci system comprises four robotic arms that are controlled by the surgeon from a remote location. One arm carries a camera that provides clear view of the affected area through a high definition digital image. The other three arms are for holding the surgical equipment that the surgeons use for performing surgery. The da Vinci robot has so far been used in gynaecologic procedures like hysterectomy, recent advances in the technology have widened the scope for usage in fertility treatments and cancer treatment etc.
