Remotec and AirRobot Enter Distribution Agreement for Small UAS

Northrop Grumman Corporation's subsidiary Remotec Inc. and AirRobot US have entered into a distribution agreement for AirRobot's line of small unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Under the agreement, Remotec is the sole reseller of these products to the first responder and law enforcement market in the United States.

UMD and FIRST to Host 2015 Chesapeake Regional FIRST Robotics Competition

The University of Maryland and FIRST will host the 2015 Chesapeake Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) April 2-4, 2015, at the XFINITY Center on the university's College Park, Md., campus. More than 1,000 high school students from Maryland, around the country, and from three other countries will go head-to-head to secure a spot in the international competition.

Solusia Air, LLC, an affiliate of Solusia Services, LLC, today announced it has been awarded an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deploy unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to perform asset audits and safety inspections for wireless and utility infrastructure firms. Solusia Air began the application process in 2014, working with JDA Aviation Technology Solutions.

Raytheon Company has been awarded a contract valued at up to $45.7 million by Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems for ground segments in support of four Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems recently purchased by the Republic of Korea.

Phoenix-S1 Balloon-Assisted UAV Successfully Brings Back Stratospheric Aerosol Samples in Antarctica

A balloon-assisted UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) named "Phoenix-S1," developed by Kyushu University and Fukuoka University, Japan, has successfully brought back stratospheric aerosol samples from the altitude of 22 km and observed aerosol density at the altitude of 23 km in Antarctica on January 24, 2015.

SDG&E Granted FAA Section 333 Approval to Fly UAS for Aerial Inspections

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) a Section 333 approval for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), allowing the utility to conduct aerial inspections of its electric and gas facilities, including emergency response damage assessments throughout its service territory. SDG&E is the second utility in the nation to be granted the Section 333 approval.

Research on Multi-Robot Systems by Dr Dylan Shell Receives NSF CAREER Grant

Dr. Dylan Shell, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Texas A&M University, received a CAREER grant from the NSF Information & Intelligent Systems' Robust Intelligence Program to investigate the limitations of traditional ways of programming groups of robots to cooperate in order to solve problems together. The grant for "CAREER: Bridging Self-Organized and Algorithmic Approaches to Multi-Robot Systems," is funded till the end of February 2020.

Two Guiness World Record Titles for Kirobo, the Robot Astronaut

Dentsu Inc. (President & CEO: Tadashi Ishii; Head Office: Tokyo; Capital: 74,609.81 million yen) announced today that Kirobo, the robot astronaut developed under the KIBO ROBOT PROJECT, a joint research project carried out in collaboration with the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, ROBO GARAGE Co., Ltd., Toyota Motor Corporation, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has been awarded two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS titles.
