New Phenomenon Makes Dielectric Elastomer Joint Promising for Flapping Wing of Robotic Birds

Dielectric elastomers are novel materials for making actuators or motors with soft and lightweight properties that can undergo large active deformations with high-energy conversion efficiencies. This has made dielectric elastomers popular for creating devices such as robotic hands, soft robots, tunable lenses and pneumatic valves -- and possibly flapping robotic wings.

Solusia Air Awarded FAA Exemption to Deploy UAS for Wireless and Utility Infrastructure Safety Inspections

Solusia Air, LLC, an affiliate of Solusia Services, LLC, today announced it has been awarded an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deploy unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to perform asset audits and safety inspections for wireless and utility infrastructure firms. Solusia Air began the application process in 2014, working with JDA Aviation Technology Solutions.

Raytheon to Deliver Ground Segments to Support Global Hawk UAS in South Korea

Raytheon Company has been awarded a contract valued at up to $45.7 million by Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems for ground segments in support of four Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems recently purchased by the Republic of Korea.

Phoenix-S1 Balloon-Assisted UAV Successfully Brings Back Stratospheric Aerosol Samples in Antarctica

A balloon-assisted UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) named "Phoenix-S1," developed by Kyushu University and Fukuoka University, Japan, has successfully brought back stratospheric aerosol samples from the altitude of 22 km and observed aerosol density at the altitude of 23 km in Antarctica on January 24, 2015.

SDG&E Granted FAA Section 333 Approval to Fly UAS for Aerial Inspections

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) a Section 333 approval for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), allowing the utility to conduct aerial inspections of its electric and gas facilities, including emergency response damage assessments throughout its service territory. SDG&E is the second utility in the nation to be granted the Section 333 approval.

Research on Multi-Robot Systems by Dr Dylan Shell Receives NSF CAREER Grant

Dr. Dylan Shell, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Texas A&M University, received a CAREER grant from the NSF Information & Intelligent Systems' Robust Intelligence Program to investigate the limitations of traditional ways of programming groups of robots to cooperate in order to solve problems together. The grant for "CAREER: Bridging Self-Organized and Algorithmic Approaches to Multi-Robot Systems," is funded till the end of February 2020.

Dentsu Inc. (President & CEO: Tadashi Ishii; Head Office: Tokyo; Capital: 74,609.81 million yen) announced today that Kirobo, the robot astronaut developed under the KIBO ROBOT PROJECT, a joint research project carried out in collaboration with the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, ROBO GARAGE Co., Ltd., Toyota Motor Corporation, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has been awarded two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS titles.

The Florida Hospital Becomes First in US to Use Stereotaxis Vdrive Duo™ Robotic Navigation System

Stereotaxis, Inc., a global leader in innovative technologies for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, and the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute in Orlando, Fla., today announced the first use of the Stereotaxis Vdrive Duo™ robotic navigation system in the U.S. to control multiple diagnostic devices during a cardiac ablation procedure. Dr. Usman Siddiqui, an electrophysiologist with the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute, performed the procedure in early February.

Heriot-Watt Dubai Student Wins Second Place at Phoenix Contact's Xplore Automation Award 2015

Taking place every three years the international competition is based on new innovative ideas, based on the implementation of PLC (Programmable Logic Control) and HMI (Human Machine Interface). There are five categories: building automation, education, environment, recreation and inspiring engineers, of which Francy was the only environmental entrant.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Robotics Team Competes at 2015 Arizona VEX U Competition

The 2015 Arizona VEX U Competition was held on Feb. 28 at the Arizona State University campus. Twelve members of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University VEX Robotics Team and their faculty advisor Dr. Joel Schipper attended the event. The team competed with two robots, a small robot named Spike and a large robot named Monstrosity.
