Australian Surgeon Utilizes Tactile Robotic Arm to Perform Partial Knee Surgery

Wuesthoff Health System declared that a minimally invasive partial knee resurfacing operation, MAKOplasty, was performed by its Melbourne hospital. The knee surgery was helpful in treating early stage or mid-stage osteoarthritis.

MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing

Surgeons can perform the MAKOplasty on either the top, inner, or outer parts of the knee. It may also be performed as a bi-compartment technique for both the upper and inner sections of the knee. After this procedure, MAKOplasty patients may enjoy a host of benefits such as a smaller incision, rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay as compared to total knee replacement.

The Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic system RIO, developed by MAKO Surgical, was used for this partial knee resurfacing procedure and delivers accurate and reliable results. The RIO features a robotic arm and a three-dimensional virtual visualization system that gives patient specific information.

The system offers the surgeon a plan prior to the surgery. It explains in detail the method for customized implant positioning and bone preparation by utilizing a CT scan of the knee. It also generates a three-dimensional, virtual view of the bone surface in real time and links the image to the pre-configured surgical plan. The robotic arm guides the surgeons to limit the bone preparation to the diseased parts. It enables surgeons to achieve optimal implant placement and positioning for every patient.
