SEMclixwas the sponsor for the Alderwood Boys and Girls Club Lego Robotics team. The team, which is called Radical Red Robots had participated in the First Lego League 2011 which was held at Lynwood, WA. A total of 29 teams had taken part in the competition having students whose ages ranged between nine and fourteen.
The First Lego League has been hosting these robotic competitions throughout the world and aim at creating awareness amongst children about science concepts and in enhancing their soft skills like team work and fair play. The theme for this year’s competition was Food Factor, each of the participating teams had to choose a type of food to work on and arrive at a solution to reduce its contamination. The panel of judges looked into factors such as the innovative side of the solution and ability to work with the Lego Mindstorm Robot in order to decide on the winner. Apart from the Lego Mindstorm Robot, the teams made use of a number of attachments to enable their robot able to navigate through obstacles.
The Radical red Robots in particular have been gearing up for the competition since September. They had chosen crab affected by oil spills as their contaminated food for which they found a solution. Their plan was to develop useful bacteria that will help the crab larvae in speeding up the molting process. The robot was called Crabeteria and was intended for use at coastal areas that were susceptible to oil spills. Crabeteria will assist the crab larvae in hastening the molting process thereby expelling out the hazardous oil droplets. As the crab grows it will absorb less and less of oil from the sea spills. This innovative idea had won the Radical Red Robots a place in the top ten.
