Abingdon-based SME, Oxford Technologies, has been awarded a further contract by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to bring its remote handling expertise to assist in the fuel debris removal project at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS site.
Representatives from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID0, supported by INS(J) visited Oxford Technologies (OTL) in January to discuss ongoing work programmes and learn about the wider capability and expertise from Oxford Technologies.
The UK company’s achievement in being awarded this work was due to the superiority of its technology and experience in the field of Nuclear Decommissioning. The work builds on an earlier contract with MHI, which was delivered successfully.
Oxford Technologies is now working closely with MHI across a number of aspects of the Fuel Debris Removal programme, including sampling of materials in order to prepare a disposal route and a potential device and deployment system for the actual removal of fuel from the reactor.
As well as the close collaboration with MHI, Oxford Technologies are increasingly looking to specialist UK companies to collaborate on the overall solution building on the relationships already developed to work on UK decommissioning programmes. Demonstrable and good working relationships are essential for success in the Japanese market and this is core to how Oxford Technologies provides overall solutions.
