The Cyberknife Robotic Radiosurgery system from Accuray has won the Outstanding Innovative Improvement Award at the Third Annual Employer Healthcare Congress which was held in Chicago from 25 to 28 October 2011.
Cyberknife System
Patients who underwent radiation therapy with the Cyberknife system completed their therapy in five days or even less than that, when compared to the traditional treatment methods that lasted for 40 therapy sessions. The short and effective administration of radiation therapy was one of the main factors that helped in achieving the recognition. The reduction in treatment duration was an advantage to both the patient and the physician.
The Cyberknife system is designed to target only the cancerous tumours and deliver the radiation dosage to only those tissues. The surrounding healthy tissues are left untouched. The Cyberknife system is able to deliver medicine to tumours located anywhere in the human body and also track and modify the treatment time according to the tumour movement. Due to short treatment times the patient is able to resume his routine within a short span of time. The Employer Healthcare Congress is one of the largest healthcare conferences in the United States and recognises significant contributions in Corporate Wellness and Voluntary Benefits spheres through the Leadership Awards. Through these awards innovative techniques in healthcare that deal with chronic illnesses are recognised and encouraged.
