iRobot Achieves Military Order Worth $1.5 M For FirstLook Robots

iRobot, a supplier of robotic technology-based solutions, has been presented with a $1.5 M order for its established proprietary model 110 FirstLook robots.

The fund was granted by the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO). The iRobot 110 FirstLook has been demonstrated and verified by the customers, following its launch last year. The robots under this military order have already been delivered, expecting an operational assessment this spring.

FirstLook is a light-weight, small-sized, throwable robot, well-suited for various infantry operations. These robots are widely deployed for specific operations missions such as raids, building clearing, and other close-in environments. FirstLook contains four incorporated cameras that ensure multi-direction situational awareness, thereby protecting the operator.

FirstLook is in-built with a unique set of capabilities. Weighing only 5lb, the robot has sufficient power to withstand 15-foot drops, survive through obstacles of 7 in height and capable of regaining its position automatically in case of tumbling down. These robots will further be upgraded to possess digital mesh networking and two-way audio communication, thereby enabling multiple robots to efficiently transmit radio communications beyond distances.

According to interim general manager of iRobot’s Military Robots business unit, Tim Trainer, the features and capabilities included in iRobot’s FirstLook has gained wide acceptance from the field and the troops anticipate benefiting from the advantages of this game-changing robot. Previously, iRobot’s SUGV and PackBot robots transformed the method of explosive ordnance disposal missions. Similarly, FirstLook will also bring transformations in the future operations of infantry and special operations missions.
