Surgeons at NYU Langone Demonstrate Robotic Surgery Skills via Satellite

NYU Langone Medical Center’s team of urological surgeons conducted robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy in New York. Using high definition satellite, this New York–based surgical procedure was shared visually with over 400 participants of American Urological Association’s (AUA) 2012 Annual Meeting, earlier this week in Atlanta.

The surgery demonstrated the advanced robotic technology for patients at NYU Langone’s Robotic Surgery Center.

According to associate professor at Department of Urology and director of robotic surgery at NYU Langone Medical, Michael Stifelman, MD, Extending across New York metropolitan area, the main objective of this advanced robotic surgery program is to upgrade this technology for simplifying complex procedures. In addition, development of novel techniques will lead to better outcomes for patients. Surgeons at NYU Langone were the first to implement robotics for partial nephrectomies. In addition, courses are being conducted on a monthly basis to train surgeons.

Partial nephrectomy is a procedure that includes removal of tumor, leaving alone the intact functional kidney. The robotic tool’s improved maneuverability is ideal for fragile cutting and stitching involved in this surgery. The procedure’s minimally-invasive nature poses reduced trauma, while protecting kidney function leading to rapid recovery time.

Being New York metro area’s largest multispecialty robotic surgical facility, Robotic Surgery Center at NYU Langone conducts robotic-assisted urologic, mitral valve, gynecologic, and general cardiothoracic surgery.
