Half of the Best High Schools in US Compete in FIRST Robotics Competition

FIRST(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) included 5of the top 10 high schools listed in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 National Rankings of Best High Schools. These schools will actively participate in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).

The FIRST Robotics Competition integrates science and technology with sport. High-school student robotic teams are challenged to construct as well as program robots under stringent conditions and time limits to carry out tasks as part of the competition. Each team will be assisted by volunteer experts.

U.S. News & World Report states that rankings are done based on the data representing the reputation of a high school and its potential to produce assessable academic outcomes.

Best High Schools that participate in FIRST as reported by U.S. News & World Report include Las Guerillas robotic team from International Academy, Bloomfield Hills, Mich; The Bit Buckets from BASIS Tucson-Tucson, Arizona,; Carpe Robotum robotic team Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology, Alexandria, Va; Titan Robotics of International School, Bellevue, Wash; and RobEn from Oxford Academy, Cypress, Calif.

Brandeis University’s Center for Youth and Communities stated that FIRST students are four times more likely to pursue a career in engineering; two times more likely to volunteer in their communities; over three times as likely to major in engineering; more likely to attain a post graduate degree; 10 times as likely to have been achieved internship, apprenticeship, or co-op job in their freshman year; and twice likely to learn science and technology.
