Florida Hospital Tampa is First to Conduct Robotic-Assisted Gallbladder Removal Surgery

Florida Hospital Tampa has successfully conducted the first single-site incision robotic surgery procedure for gallbladder removal. Removal of gallbladder through minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery techniques creates no visible scar, leading to only minimal discomfort. The surgery can be completed within an hour, requiring hospital stay for just 4-6 h.

A general surgeon at Florida Hospital Tampa, Earl W. McAllister, MD is the first expert surgeon in the Tampa Bay area who successfully achieved this unique robotic-assisted gallbladder removal surgery, also termed as cholecystectomy. This unique surgery was achieved by making a single incision via the belly button.

This procedure, when carried out with conventional laparoscopic surgery, would need at least four small incisions.

Around 1M of the U.S. population will experience gallbladder removal surgery each year, among which 40% are women who are aged between 18 and 44. In 2010, around 9,722 gallbladder removal surgeries were performed in Tampa Bay area alone.

Intuitive Surgical, provider of the da Vinci System has achieved FDA-approval for single-site advanced cholecystectomy procedures in December 2011. Florida Hospital Tampa Surgeons deploy this unique, versatile system for performing a variety of minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgical procedures such as urological surgery, cardiovascular, gynecological and general procedures. In 2009, da Vinci Robotic Surgical System was procured by the hospital for the first time, followed by a second system in 2011.

Florida Hospital Tampa is 475-bed tertiary hospital specializing in a number of areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular medicine, orthopaedics, pediatrics women’s services, oncology, endocrinology, bariatrics, sleep medicine, wound healing and general surgery.
