RIVA Fully Automated Compounding System Reaches Milestone of 2 Million Medication Doses

Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems), maker of the RIVA pharmacy IV compounding system, today announced its technology has safely and accurately prepared more than 2 million medication doses globally since its introduction in 2008.

RIVA, the only fully-automated system available on the market today, prepares medications for syringes and IV bags in an aseptic environment for pediatric, general and cancer hospitals and compounding centers.

“We are excited about RIVA’s ability to achieve such an impressive milestone,” said Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, president and CEO of IH Systems. “This proves that RIVA consistently dispenses doses safely and accurately, which is particularly important given this year’s pharmacy product recalls and outbreaks linked to contaminated IV medications. Plus, new compounding legislation only increases the need among healthcare providers for reliable and efficient methods to deliver IV medications to patients.”

Installed systems have performed more than 120,000 routine sterility quality control checks across all RIVA installations with no contamination being found in any compounds produced by the units. Additionally, RIVA, which is USP<797>-compliant, can process individual or batch doses in an ISO Class 5 environment, and is the only system with true walk-away capability.

“RIVA reduces pharmacy waste, cost-per-dose and vulnerability to medication shortages, which is paramount for pharmacies seeking cost savings and enhanced efficiency,” said Hansen. “More importantly, preparing medications with RIVA’s unmatched compounding technology has generated a significant return on investment for our customers.”

Earlier this year, independent healthcare research firm KLAS recognized RIVA as the category leader in ‘pharmacy automation: IV robots’, following surveys and in-depth interviews with healthcare providers and administrators across the U.S. RIVA’s overall score of 86.7 is the highest for IV robots (one component of the RIVA system is a robotic arm) used in pharmacy automation that were evaluated in the report. In addition, 95 percent of RIVA customers surveyed by KLAS indicated they would buy the RIVA system again (and many current customers have purchased multiple systems).1
