King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre Acquires RIVA Automated Pharmacy IV Compounding System

Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems) today announced that King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC), based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, purchased two RIVA systems for its pharmacy. RIVA, the only fully-automated pharmacy IV compounding system on the market today, was selected because of its ability to safely prepare medications in an aseptic environment and provide significant cost savings. The systems are scheduled for delivery and installation later this year.

“We are excited that King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre chose RIVA to provide increased safety, efficiency and productivity in its pharmacy,” said Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, president and CEO of IH Systems. “Also, we are pleased that the hospital selected RIVA over several competing IV compounding manufacturers. Given how well-respected the hospital is in the region, this will help continue to pave the way for additional RIVA installations throughout the Middle East.”

The new RIVA contract is the latest development highlighting IH Systems’ expansion in the region. Local IH Systems distributor NAWAH, which facilitated the acquisition of KFSH&RC’s RIVA systems, was responsible for the placement of another system scheduled for installation in Doha, Qatar. NAWAH, a leader in healthcare and medical technology, serves as the company’s exclusive distributor in Saudi Arabia, State of Kuwait, Sultanate of Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain and State of Qatar.

“Our selection of advanced sterile preparation robotic solutions like RIVA shows the hospital’s commitment to providing patients with the most advanced medical technologies available to ensure patient safety and provide optimal pharmaceutical care,” said Dr. Ahmed Aljedai, director of pharmaceutical care division at KFSH&RC. “We provide the highest level of specialized care in the region and it is critical for our pharmacy to have cutting-edge solutions to meet growing demand from patients.”

Since its introduction in 2008, RIVA technology has safely and accurately prepared more than 2.2 million medication doses globally. RIVA, which is USP<797>-compliant, can process individual or batch doses in an ISO Class 5 environment, and is the only system with true walk-away capability. The system’s ability to handle extended production runs with no staff intervention required enables hospital pharmacies to prepare specific medication doses ahead of orders, reduce waste and more.
