Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes is expanding its use of a new type of interactive instruction in their Learning Centers—an Instructional Robot, made by Double Robotics.
The robot is a mobile device with an iPad attached, enabling an instructor to observe instruction remotely over a Facetime session, interacting with clinicians and students in real time. Students and instructors are easily adjusting to the new technology. Students love the opportunity to give the robot and its virtual instructor a "high-five."
Lindamood- Bell is currently using this technology in select Learning Centers across the United States and the world. The technology allows the user to assist students and instructors from miles away. Jody Gilles, Director of Instruction for Lindamood-Bell, is able to interact with 10 to 12 students per day for 20-30 minutes each, from her office in California. "My job is to ensure we are providing quality differentiated instruction to all of our students. The robot and technology allows me to provide support and oversee instruction with our students all over the globe." In addition, the robot is saving on travel expenses and time. "The robot allows us to engage and connect with students all over the globe. I can see a student in Newport Beach and then a student in Sydney and then a classroom in Kodiak, Alaska, all without getting on a plane," adds Ms. Gilles. Jessica Corinne, Lindamood-Bell Center Director in Los Gatos, CA, adds "I appreciate the high level of support that our students receive from our Instruction Department. Now that we are prototyping the Double Robot in our centers, our Instructional Support Team has increased the efficiency and efficacy of support visits in our centers."
