A team of students from the Straughn High School (SHS) have won a number of awards in a series of competitions that was conducted in places from Montgomery to Orlando.
The SHS Tiger Tech Team has won the State LifeSmarts competition against two teams and also the Rookie Inspiration Award at the FIRST Robotics competition.. The team did win it along with getting an all-expense paid journey to the Los Angeles LifeSmarts Competition, which would be held in the last week of April. The team fielded questions about personal finance, environment, health & safety, consumer rights and responsibilities and technology.
The team took part in four rounds, which included a challenge round, a lightning round, a Family feud order round and a question and answer session. According to Williams, they won the maximum points in the challenge round. The boys revealed that they were thrilled to compete at the national level but the going was bound to be tough. After the LifeSmarts completion the team travelled to take part in the robotics competition in South Florida. The team disclosed that they had gained a lot of knowledge by observing and interacting with other teams and hoped to put this knowledge gained to use for improving their next robot. Each team member had learnt different things from the competition. Dallas Ham revealed that he learnt to be more mechanical while Williams said that he had learnt the importance of computer programming. Sherri Williams, the team adviser stated that she was happy that her team was getting such great experiences and successes.
