iRobot has received a 14.1 million dollar order from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for the delivery of 86 man transportable robotic system (MTRS).
The initial order was for the delivery of an indefinite quantity of 86 MTRS MK 1 Mod 1 robots and the corresponding spare parts and accessories for $ 230 million. This model is designed on the same lines as the iRobot 510 PackBot model. iRobot plans to have the models delivered by the second quarter of this year.
Robert Moses, the President of iRobot, highlighted that the use of unmanned ground vehicles has grown steadily since the inception of the PackBot, ten years ago. He added that the PackBot would continue to ensure safety to the troops deployed on the battle fields. The PackBots are designed to provide safety to those in danger. So far, more than 4000 PackBots have been supplied to the military forces and other civil defense sectors across the world. The PackBots have been contributing in risky search operations such as bomb disposal, reconnaissance etc.
