Northrop Grumman to Deliver Additional STARLite Radar Systems for the U.S. Army

Northrop Grumman has been contracted to deliver 44 additional STARLite wide area surveillance radars for the MQ-1C Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft system of the U.S. Army. STARLite consists of ground moving target indicator features, synthetic aperture radar, and dismount moving target indicator capabilities.

As per the terms of the contract option, radar deliveries will start during April 2013 and will come to an end in March 2014. The total number of systems under contract will come up to 174.

According to Northrop Grumman VP for tactical sensor solutions, Steve McCoy, this contract confirms the Army's reliability in STARLite's unique convenience features, surpassing reliability during deployment. STARLite is capable of ensuring warfighters on the ground to depend on its airborne intelligence delivery during critical situations.

This AN/ZPY-1 STARLite (Small Tactical Radar – Lightweight) from Northrop Grumman serves as the Army radar program of record for the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, in addition to its demonstration operation on the Army's Persistent Threat Detection Systems aerostat. STARLite has performed in digital interoperability demonstrations at Camp Roberts in California, where its high competence to share data across a network and cue non-collated sensors were demonstrated. With only 65 lb of weight, the radar system is suitable for being integrated into various manned and unmanned aircraft system platforms for carrying out mission-critical tactical reconnaissance. The system can perform all-weather dismounted and moving targets, and wide-area surveillance and detecting stationary.

Northrop Grumman is a provider of advanced systems, products and solutions for information systems, aerospace, electronics, and technical services.
