Cancerous Tumor Suctioned from Major Vein Enabling Minimally-Invasive Kidney Removal

Physicians at Henry Ford Hospital successfully suctioned a cancerous tumor from a major vein in a patient with metastatic kidney cancer, clearing the way for him to undergo a minimally-invasive kidney removal. This allowed him to participate in a clinical trial using genetic material from his tumor to produce a vaccine to help fight his metastatic disease.

Bio-Inspired Robotic Sock May Help Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis

Patients who are bedridden or unable to move their legs are often at risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a potentially life-threatening condition caused by blood clots forming along the lower extremity veins of the legs. A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering has invented a novel sock that can help prevent DVT and improve survival rates of patients.

Three Research Groups Obtain President's BRAIN Initiative Funding to Improve Artificial Limb Technology

Three groups of researchers who have received support from the National Institutes of Health will obtain funding from the President's BRAIN Initiative to improve artificial limb technology. The new awards will be funded and administered by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and will build on the fundamental discoveries that were made possible by NIH support.

Study Discusses Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Partial Nephrectomy Surgery for Kidney Cancer Patients

A new study, published in the February issue of Health Affairs, found that in terms of quality-adjusted life-years gained, the benefits of robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy surgery for kidney cancer patients outweighed the health care and surgical costs to patients and payers by a ratio of five to one.
