Surgical Robot Provides Similar Outcomes but More Expensive Compared to Laparoscopy

In a study of national data on colon surgery, Johns Hopkins researchers found that while patients who undergo either minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery or the high-tech robotic approach have similar outcomes, robotic surgery is significantly more expensive.

Mazor Robotics Ltd., the developer of Renaissance™, an innovative surgical guidance system and its complementary products, announced today that Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville (FL) has purchased its second Renaissance system. Baptist Jacksonville, which was recently ranked the number one hospital in the region by US News & World Report, purchased its first Renaissance system in March of this year.

Lankenau Heart Institute's chief of Cardiac Surgery, Francis Sutter, M.D., recently completed his 1000th coronary artery bypass (CABG) procedure using the da Vinci Surgical System, giving one PA resident his heart back for the holidays. Dr. Sutter has performed more robotic CABGs than any other U.S. surgeon.

New Robotic Trolley System Provides Added Security for Recovering Stroke Patients

The risk and fear of falling often affects patients who are recovering from a stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, and orthopaedic injuries, and that fear may inhibit their progress in rehabilitation. The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is offering a new robotic trolley system providing patients added security and allowing them to overcome that fear, thereby maximizing benefit from therapy.

In introducing the space-aged R2-D2 look-a-likes, White Plains Hospital becomes one of the first hospitals in Westchester County to tap into a technology that uses pulsed xenon ultraviolet light to destroy bacteria, viruses, mold and other pathogens.
