NYU Langone Medical Center’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Department has concluded its first year of providing endoscopic robotic mitral valve repair surgery for its patients. This procedure was initiated in 2011 spring by Dr. Didier F. Loulmet, at the medical center.
In contrast to traditional open-heart surgeries, robotic endoscopic mitral valve repair entails five pencil size holes incised between the ribs on the chest’s right side for accessing the heart. Robotic tools provide a magnified, 3-D view of the mitral valve and other major structures, ensuring the patient with minimal physical impact such as less pain, less post-operative complications and rapid recovery.
Mitral valve repairs are common minimally invasive surgeries performed on the heart. Among the overall minimally invasive cardiac surgeries at NYU Langone, mitral valve repairs comprise 85%. In the past 30 years, over 5,000 mitral valve surgeries in which 4,000 were mitral value repairs have been performed at the medical center. Almost one third of surgical mitral valve repairs at NYU Langone were robotic-assisted.
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department has an extensive collection of robotic programs. Apart from robotic mitral valve repair, other robotic procedures include robotic lobectomy, robotic coronary artery bypass, and other thoracic procedures such as esophagectomy.
