Novel Hovering-Type Cyclops AUV Developed for Underwater 3D Terrain Mapping

Precise control and high quality sensing techniques are required for the accurate 3D image mapping of the seafloor by autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Profs. Son-Cheol Yu and Hyunwoo Cho (Dept. of CiTE), with graduate student Mr. Juhyun Pyo, have developed an AUV called Cyclops for high maneuverability.

TM Robotics Partners with Cornerstone Automation Systems to Sell Intelligent Box-Opening Device

Today TM Robotics announced it has partnered with Cornerstone Automation Systems, LLC (CASI) to sell an intelligent box-opening device (IBOD) that combines the reliability of TM Robotics’ Toshiba Machine robots with the ingenuity of CASI’s intelligent box-opening software. Current box-opening options available on the market have limitations.

CWU GEAR UP Teams Qualify to Participate in VEX Robotics World Competition

Two middle school teams from Central Washington University’s GEAR UP program will attend the VEX Robotics World Competition in Louisville, Kentucky, April 19-24. The teams qualified at the state meet held in February, besting 30 other teams to compete internationally. They are the only teams in eastern Washington to qualify.

Researchers Work on Making Full-Size Driverless Vehicles More Stable in Risky Road Conditions

At a dirt test track near the Georgia Institute of Technology campus, researchers monitor a scale-model autonomous car as it drifts around corners at a blistering eight meters per second – equivalent to 90 miles per hour in a full-size vehicle. Pushing this car to its limits could help make full-size driverless vehicles more stable in risky road conditions.

Royal Navy Uses UAV to Assist in Navigation Through the Antarctic

The Royal Navy has launched a miniature pilotless aircraft from its ice patrol ship HMS Protector, developed by researchers at the University of Southampton. This was the first time such an unmanned aerial vehicle has been put into use by the Royal Navy to aid navigation through the Antarctic.

Electronics manufacturer uAvionix has introduced the smallest and lightest ADS-B receiver ever made. The new "pingRX" weighs 1.5 grams and requires 1/100th the power of conventional ADS-B receivers. It implements "Sense and Avoid" capabilities for small drones operating in the National Airspace (NAS).
