Researchers Develop Three-Fingered Soft Robotic Hand with Embedded Fiber Optic Sensors

Optical sensors may be uniquely suited for use in robotic hands, according to Carnegie Mellon University researchers who have developed a three-fingered soft robotic hand with multiple embedded fiber optic sensors. They also have created a new type of stretchable optical sensor.

Powered Prosthetics Automatically Tune Themselves

When amputees receive powered prosthetic legs, the power of the prosthetic limbs needs to be tuned by a prosthetics expert so that a patient can move normally - but the prosthetic often needs repeated re-tuning. Biomedical engineering researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have now developed software that allows powered prosthetics to tune themselves automatically, making the devices more functionally useful and lowering the costs associated with powered prosthetic use.

This follows the recent invitation to indicate Intent to Participate that was issued in May.

Global Sales of Robotics Products and Hardware in 2013 Increased to $9.5 Billion

Global sales of robotics products and hardware in 2013 increased 12% year over year, to $9.5 billion, according to the International Federation of Robotics. For the period of 2014-2017 the IFR forecast sales of service robots to increase to about 134,500 units with a value of $18.9 billion.
